About as iconic as brewery architecture gets–this is the granite herd that inspired a beer. The Elephant Gate is the grand portal connecting Copenhagen’s New Carlsberg District to Valby.
Amazing what the Clean Air Act and a nice wash can do–Indianapolis’ Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral looks great. The seat of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, the actual parish here is pretty small.
Small but attractive indeed–Norwegian-American architects Michaelsen & Rognstad designed this Italian Baroque-inspired terracotta jewel for olive oil importer William Bertini in 1922. A renovation of an Italianate originally built in 1877, the building is a neat microcosm of the path of River North.
A neoclassical flourish meant to cap the entrance to Indianapolis’ Riverside Park, the Thomas Taggart Memorial was built to honor the progressive three-term Mayor of Indianapolis who founded the city parks department and pushed for the creation of Riverside Park.
Lot going on here: begun as the Cooper-Monatah Hotel, but requisitioned by the federal government for use as a military hospital before it ever opened. Operated for years as a segregationist white-only apartment hotel. Home to a legendary jazz venue that served integrated audiences.
